The 1rst auto race in the United States, took place in Chicago, Illinois on November 2, 1895, Frank Duryea winning in 10 h and 23 min, beating 3 petrol fueled cars and 2 electric cars. The 1rst trophy awarded was the Vanderbilt Cup. Single seater (open/wheel) racing is by far the most well known form of motor sport, with cars designed specifically for high/speed racing. The wheels are not covered, and the cars often have airfoil wings in front and in the rear to produce down force & enhance adhesion to the track.
The best single seater racing known is the Formula One World Championship, which involves an annual championship - feat. major international car & engine manufacturers in an ongoing battle of technology and driver skills. Formula One is, the most expensive sport in the world, with some teams spending in excess of over 201 million US dollars per year. Formula One is widely considered to be the pinnacle of motor sports, and a seat in a Formula One car is undoubtedly the peak of any driver's racing career.
