History of Basketball:
Treat yourself, your friends and family to a memory that will last a lifetime with Your Favorite Basketball team tickets at btix.org. The game of Basketball itself was invented by Dr. James Naismith, back in 1891. Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian minister on the faculty of YMCA professionals (Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Under strict orders from Dr. Luther Gulick, the head of Physical Education at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith was giving only 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" to keep the young men occupied during the long New England winters. After brainstorming on some ideas & rejecting other ideas some as either too rough or poorly suited for a gym. Naismith thought back to games he played as a child, to help developed basketball's original 13 rules, with a soccer ball & a peach basket nailed to either end of the school's gymnasium the game of basketball was born.
Basketball soon became a popular men's sport in the United States very quickly, and began to spread to other countries as well. Additionally, there were several attempts to establish a women's version of the game (under modified rules) this was met with great resistance in some circles and was consequently far slower in recognition.
In 1946, the (NBA) National Basketball Association was formed, organizing the top pro. teams and leading to greater popularity of the game. An upstart organization, the American Basketball Association, emerged in 1967 and briefly threatened the NBA's dominance until the rival leagues merged in 1976.
